NEWARK (WABC) -- An ATM was stolen from a Newark fried chicken restaurant Tuesday morning.
It appears a truck was backed into the door of Newark Fried Chicken at 727 Frelinghuysen Ave. just before 5 a.m., according to police.
Surveillance video clearly shows two vehicles, a pickup truck and a red smaller vehicle in the crime. Both drivers hop out of the vehicles and work to open the locks to the fast-food restaurant.
One uses a power tool to cut the locks of the gate, and the other thief acts as a look-out. After opening the gate, they cut the door locks, opening each door and sizing up the space.
The video shows the two making several attempts at ramming the pick-up into the store until the vehicle backs all the way in. Once inside, the thieves pick up the damaged ATM and move to throw it into the truck.
Apparently they had scouted the restaurant, because they moved in without hesitation. They carried several items they intended to use, but realized they were not needed for the crime.
The back of the pick-up is badly damaged in the heist, but the thieves get away. The truck was seen fleeing the scene. Police also are looking for a red Audi that fled the robbery, toward Route 22.
Authorities are not saying if this crime is connected to several others in Newark, but the methods used are similar to other crimes.
