NEWBURGH (WABC) -- Three people were shot, one of them fatally, overnight in Orange County.
The incident happened around 1:30 a.m. at South Lander Street and Courtney Avenue in Newburgh, as the three men were participating in a card game when they were the victims of an apparent robbery. Now, the bullet holes marked by police tape tell the story, as does the makeshift memorial complete with a deck of cards and dollar bills.
It ended in gunfire, with 67-year-old Samuel Stubbs, a fixture in the area, shot and killed. He was known as much for his flashy sense of style as his love of shooting dice and playing poker.
"He was a real character, a funny character, and he dressed very well," friend Duwanye Beckwith said. "Real sharp guy. Very friendly, would help you out. He'd bring the tables out, and all he'd do is play cards. Don't bother nobody."
The deadly scene played out outside a Laundromat, with Stubbs' two friends, both in their 30s, wounded but expected to survive.
"Sammy was too good to go like that," friend Toni Hernandez said. "Never bothered anyone. No one."
City police are investigating, along with New York State Police.
