MATTITUCK (WABC) -- One person was killed when a small plane went down in the Long Island Sound Monday morning.

The "small white experimental aircraft" was spotted about seven miles north of Mattituck.

A parachute was found next to the plane.

Another aircraft spotted the aircraft at around 8:50 a.m.

The Coast Guard and local law enforcement responded to the scene, and Mattituck Fire Department divers recovered the body.

Police say the fatality appears to be the male pilot, believed to be the only person on board. He was identified as 41-year-old Zubair Khan, of New York City.

The NTSB will continue the investigation into the crash.
