MONTEBELLO, Calif. -- A 1-year-old boy who was taken when a suspect stole a van from a Montebello, California, parking lot, triggering an AMBER Alert, has been found safely on Thursday.
Officials said the stolen van was found in a parking lot with the child safely inside.
The van was stolen from the SA Recycling Center parking lot at 1545 Gage Rd. at about 3 p.m., according to the Montebello Police Department.
The child's mother, Maria Castro, had pleaded for the suspect to return her baby.
"He's a baby, I just want my baby back. It's really hard. I don't care if you took my car or whatever is in the car, I just want my baby back. That is most important for me right now," Maria Castro said.
Montebello police said the suspect was described as a Hispanic male in his 30s with dark spiked hair.
The suspect approached the parked van while three children sat in the car, according to police. Officials said their mother stepped about 10 feet away from the van to recycle some items when the suspect ordered two girls, ages 4 and 6, out of the car.
With the keys already in the ignition, police said the suspect started the car and drove away heading southbound on Gage Road.
The suspect is still at large. If you have any information that can help detectives in their investigation, you're urged to call police at (323)887-1313.
