NASSAU COUNTY (WABC) -- A school bus strike that would have affected thousands of students on Long Island has been averted.

"Baumann and Sons Buses" and the teamsters say they've reached a tentative agreement on a new contract.

Over the weekend, the union had rejected an offer and voted to strike.

The bus company transports 15,000 students to 35 schools in Nassau and Suffolk counties.

Newsday reported that the union had been demanding more pay, improved working conditions and greater company contributions to health care.
