Brooklyn man gets 25 to life in fatal shooting of 1-year-old in stroller

NEW YORK (WABC) -- A Brooklyn man convicted of murdering a 1-year-old boy was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison Friday, while an accomplice received 15 years for supplying the gunman with the deadly weapon.

Daquan Breland, 25, and 21-year-old Daquan Wright were convicted in July in connection with the death of 16-month-old Antiq Hennis in September 2013.

The bullets were aimed at the victim's father, Anthony Hennis, but Breland missed and struck the toddler, who was being pushed in a stroller.

"These defendants showed a callous disregard for human life, and now an innocent baby is dead because of their outrageous actions," District Attorney Ken Thompson said. "They're not fit to remain in society and deserve every minute they'll spend in prison."

Breland was convicted of second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and Wright second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

According to testimony, at about 7:20 p.m. on September 1, 2013, Wright handed a .45-caliber semiautomatic pistol to Breland, who fired several shots in the direction of Anthony Hennis at the intersection of Bristol Street and Livonia Avenue in Brownsville. One bullet struck the boy in the head, killing him, and both suspects fled the state. They were apprehended in Pennsylvania five days after the homicide.

Breland's former roommate testified that he admitted to him shortly after the incident that he shot a rival, referring to the victim's father by his nickname.

Breland and Wright were arrested in Wilkes-Barre the day Antiq was buried.
