Crowd gathers at City Hall to oppose Trump's stance on Muslims coming to US

LOWER MANHATTAN, New York (WABC) -- Dozens of people attended an interfaith rally on the steps of New York City Hall Wednesday to protest GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump's proposed ban on Muslims.

At the rally, council members, other elected officials, and faith leaders united to denounce Trump's remarks about banning Muslims from the United States, as well as other anti-immigrant remarks.

New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito sent a letter Tuesday to community leaders asking them to attend to oppose Trump's stance.

"I am very proud of the work that we have done together to advance smart, humane policies that have served as a model for the rest of the country," said Mark-Viverito. "Donald Trump may think he's the quintessential New Yorker, but his racist, anti-immigrant remarks fly directly in the face of everything that we stand for and have no place in our city."

Almost all of Trump's GOP rivals have denounced the proposal to ban Muslims in the U.S. The White House has mocked him, and Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has said his move to target Muslims is playing into the hands of ISIS.
