PERTH AMBOY, New Jersey (WABC) -- A school district in New Jersey is being admonished by a local prosecutor, who says it has repeatedly failed to report crimes to police.

The Middlesex County Prosecutor sent a letter to Perth Amboy school officials, saying several instances of criminal activity were either not reported in a timely manner, or not at all.

They include gun possession and a knife assault.

The school district did not return our requests for comment.

Perth Amboy Mayor Wilda Diaz released the following statement: "The safety of our children should never be compromised. It is a cause for concern when policy is not followed and children are put at risk. The City of Perth Amboy's Police Department holds the best interest of the community to ensure the well being of our families."
