NEWARK, New Jersey (WABC) -- Several people, including a baby, had to be rescued from a burning building in New Jersey Sunday.

Four people and their dog were trapped on a balcony in Newark when firefighters arrived at the structure on Market Street.

The residents were stuck on the top floor of the three-story mixed-use building.

"The first two companies immediately went into a rescue operation," Newark Fire Chief John Centanni said. "They removed three adults and one child, and I believe a dog, off the third-floor balcony with heavy smoke pushing out over their heads."

Firefighters say flames broke out on a lower floor and spread upward from there.

The Red Cross is assisting 10 families displaced by the fire.
