STAFFORD (WABC) -- A 2-year-old girl has died after being pulled from her grandparents' swimming pool in New Jersey.

The incident happened around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday on Buccaneer Lane in Stafford.

Authorities say the girl wandered off after her grandmother left her watching television. When the grandmother couldn't find her, she found the rear screen door open and the child submerged in the in-ground pool.

The child's uncle performed CPR until police arrived, and the girl was transported to Southern Ocean Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

The victim did not live in the house with her grandparents, and her identity and address are not being released at this time.

Officials say this is tremendously tragic accident, and no criminality is suspected. It illustrates how important pool safety is at this time of year, and parents are reminded that they need to keep close watch on children who cannot swim if there is a pool.
