Toddler safe after carjacking in Newark
Toni Yates reveals new surveillance video of the suspect.

NEWARK, New Jersey (WABC) -- A 2-year-old child is safe after a carjacker stole the the vehicle the toddler riding in Monday afternoon.

The car was recovered abandoned on Adams Street, at the intersection with Ferry Street, a few blocks from where it was taken.

Surveillance video shows the black Mitsubishi with its flashers on pull up on Adams Street.

What you can't see is the sleeping 2-year-old in the backseat.

After a few moments, the suspect gets out of the SUV, seeming to let people pass by first to go unnoticed.

The suspect, in a baseball cap, continues to look around as he crosses the street, headed towards Ferry Street.

Newscopter 7 was overhead as more police cars arrived fanning out across the section looking for that suspect who police say carjacked the SUV from Ferry Street just a short time earlier on Monday.

Surveillance video shows the first police car arriving after spotting the Mitsubishi, and then more officers arrived.

The video shows a woman cross the street. She went right to the backseat and retrieved the toddler.

Eyewitness News is told that child is okay.

Police took the SUV away to look for evidence and fingerprints.
