Suspect robs elderly woman, 4-year-old girl on Upper West Side
UPPER WEST SIDE, Manhattan (WABC) -- A heartless thief is wanted for two robberies on the Upper West Side.
One victim was an 81-year-old woman, and the other was a 4-year-old girl who was with her mother and 5-month-old sister.
An elderly woman named 'Carmin' was alone at the Post Office on Columbus Avenue and 68th Street around 2:00 in the afternoon. As Carmin was filling out a money order, the suspects snatched her purse off of the counter.
About 15 minutes later, police say the suspect ended up at a Chase bank on Broadway and 70th Street. He went through Carmin's purse, and then zeroed in on a 37-year-old woman named 'Karen.'
'Karen' was with her two kids, a 4-year-old and a 5-month-old in a stroller. Karen says her 4-year-old loves to help out, so she let her take the cash out of the ATM.
The suspect then snatched the money from the child, and in the process took her glove.
"To take the money out of a 4-year-old's hand...he grabbed her hand, I mean, he didn't even try to go around her, he didn't even try to avoid her, he just went straight for the money. You know, she's scared. She thinks that he wanted her glove - she's afraid that he is going to come back for her other glove," Karen said.
Carmin also has a message for the suspect.
"Don't do something like that to an old person like me, you know? I'm 81 years old, and he did that...I was nervous, I didn't call the cops right away because I forgot," she added.
Carmin's daughters did call police. Detectives have posted flyers throughout the neighborhood in hopes of catching the suspect.
