David Novarro has the story.

PARK SLOPE, Brooklyn (WABC) -- A 4-year-old boy who fell down an elevator shaft in Park Slope has died.

The boy, identified as Jack Roberts, was said to be alert and conscious when he was taken to Methodist Hospital, but he died Thursday morning.

The incident happened around 8:15 p.m. Wednesday, at a garage located on Union Street. Police say the boy, who was with his parents, climbed into an elevator on the third floor and suddenly fell through a gap between the elevator and the wall.

The boy dropped about 50 feet.

According to eyewitnesses, the rescue was fast because an FDNY firehouse is across the street from the garage.

The Department of Buildings responded to the scene for an investigation. The DOB said there's an ongoing investigation of the elevator, which is used to move vehicles in the garage, and issued a cease-use order pending further review.
