NEW YORK (WABC) -- Two Port Authority police officers are in stable condition after the gun one of them was cleaning accidentally discharged.

Authorities say the shooting happened at the Port Authority Vehicle Inspection Facility on McClester Street in Port Newark.

An officer was inside the 'cleaning room', a designated area where officers are authorized to clean their weapons.

One round was fired, first striking the PA Police Officer who was cleaning his gun in the left hand.

The bullet went through the officer's hand and then struck a second Port Authority officer in the left thigh.

Both officers were transported to University Hospital in Newark.

A department investigation is underway.
