NEW YORK (WABC) -- At the mom and pop toy store in the West Village, Kidding Around owner Christine Clark is all about classic gifts, like books.

"Books really do stand the test of time," says Clark.

And timing is how to find a deal on toys. Dealnews.com's Ben Glaser says it pays to wait.

"The sweet spot for deals is December 7th to December 20th," said Glaser.

2 weeks when toy shoppers hold a monopoly on discounts. But for the hottest toys? Like anything Star Wars related. Ben says if you see a sale buy it before it sells out.

"If you see any discounts on it, it's probably a good deal."

December is a big month to swipe credit cards. But how about gift cards?

"December is the best month to get gift card deals," touts Glaser.

Check out restaurant gift cards, like California Pizza Kitchen where a $50 gift card gets you another 10 bucks - free.

But Ben's best bet? Itunes gift cards.

"We see 10 to 20 percent off. That's as good as cash, practically," says Ben.

Other deals for under the tree, discounted power tools.

"Hand tools, even power tools, we see a quarter of the deals we list as best of the year prices," says Ben.

And if you're going to order online, consumer expert, Andrea Woroch says circle one day in December.

"December 18th. Where retailers offer free shipping with guaranteed delivery by Christmas Eve,"

After Christmas is where you'll see 80% off holiday dcor.

And Ben says retail giant Amazon starts discounting on the 23rd. That's when you start shopping for jewelry and luxury apparel, designer names, Calvin Klein, hand bags and shoes.

Some other big take-ways. Wait to buy bedding, white sales are just around the corner, next month.

If you can hold off on electronics wait until after next months consumer electronics show.

But if you're in the market for a car, circle New Year's Eve, December 31st. That's when buyers have the advantage - since dealers will be clearing last year's inventory off showroom floors.
