NJ police shoot, kill bear after it wanders into yard sale

PLAINFIELD, N.J. -- Police have shot and killed a black bear that wandered into the backyard of a central New Jersey home where a yard sale was being staged.

Plainfield police say they received a 911 call around 8:30 a.m. Sunday reporting that a bear was running on Leland Avenue.

Officers soon located the bruin and followed it to the 700 block of South Avenue, where it was killed around 9:45 a.m.

Authorities say state wildlife officials were headed to the site to collect the animal.

Police had sent out an alert telling city residents to remain in their homes while officers tracked the bear.
