TARRYTOWN, N.Y. -- A man from Westchester County died while swimming in the Hudson River Friday afternoon.

The Tarrytown Police Department said two men were sitting on the edge of the river at the riverfront part at the end of West Main Street, when one of the men decided to go swimming.

According to police, the man, 43, of Sleepy Hollow, removed some clothes, shoes and person items before getting into the water. He swam about 50 feet from shore and turned around to come back, when he submerged for a period of time.

The man came back up out of the water, but was unconscious. The other man was able to get the victim to shore, where he was given medical assistance. The victim was unconscious and not breathing at that time.

Paramedics took the man to Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, where he died a short time later.
