NEW YORK (WABC) -- A New York City teacher was killed while on a cross-country bicycle ride to raise money for charity.

25 year old Patrick Wanninkhof was a member of Teach For America and had most recently taught app development at Lehman College.

He was a member of Bike and Build, which raises funds for affordable housing projects.

According to Bike and Build, Wanninkhof was leading a trip from Maine to Santa Barbara Thursday when he was struck and killed by a vehicle while riding in Oklahoma.

The organization released a statement: "Patrick was an avid cyclist and musician and came to Bike & Build after serving for 3 years with Teach for America. He had recently completed his Masters in Teaching Adolescent Physics. His sister, Suzette, completed Bike & Build's South Carolina to Santa Cruz trip in 2014. Bike & Build's priorities in the aftermath of this tragedy will be to support and work with the Wanninkhof family and the ME2SB trip according to their needs, as well as pass on all pertinent information as it becomes available."
