FDNY to add 21 names to Sept. 11 memorial; TWU to honor members who helped on 9/11

NEW YORK (WABC) -- As the 14-year mark since the September 11 attacks approaches, the FDNY and TWU are honoring members who helped at the World Trade Center.

The names of 21 firefighters will join the 89 others already on the list of those who have died on the World Trade Center Memorial Wall. All died with illnesses related to their work at the WTC site.

The special dedication takes place Tuesday at 4 p.m. at the FDNY headquarters in Brooklyn.

The Transport Workers Union is also holding its ceremony to honor its workers who helped with the response and recovery on 9/11.

More than 100 transit workers who served at Ground Zero will receive participation medals from the union.

The TWU said transit workers provided all of the heavy rigs that were critical in the first three days after the attack. It said ironworkers were the first to cut the I-beams to allow rescue workers in, and bus and train operators helped take people out of the city and bring first responders into it.

The ceremony for the TWU is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Union Hall on Montague Street.
