An elderly woman died in Westchester County after police said she went back into her burning home to get her cat.

The fire happened at about 6 a.m. Wednesday on Main Street in Mount Kisco.

Westchester County police said a man and woman who were home when the fire started both got out safely at first. The man went to a gas station to call for help, but at some point the woman went back inside to get her cat and didn't make it back out on her own.

When firefighters arrived, they couldn't even go in at first because of intense smoke and fire. Once they got inside they found the woman and took her to the hospital, and she died a short time later.

The woman has been identified as 86-year-old Chrystine Nicholas.

Police said it appears the fire started on the second floor of the house. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
