Long lines to register guns in Ulster County

KINGSTON, N.Y. (WABC) -- There was a considerable wait at the Ulster County Sheriff's office on Friday morning. People were on line seeking or renewing pistol permits.

"I'm doing it - it's our right," said Luke Garvey.

The scene played out less than 24 hours after a Facebook post by Ulster's sheriff, titled "Attention licensed handgun owners." The post encouraged citizens who are licensed to carry a firearm to please do so.

Paul Van Blarcum insists the message was directed to those who are already permitted, and was not a blanket all to arms.

Nationally gun sales are booming. The FBI says Black Friday broke a record - the agency processed 180,000 background checks - an average of two per second. That was before Wednesday's mass shooting in San Bernardino - events that firearms dealers say leads to an uptick in activity.
