Annoying sound plaguing Bedford-Stuyvesant residents

BEDFORD-STUYVESANT, Brooklyn (WABC) -- An annoying high-pitched hum is driving one Brooklyn neighborhood mad.

No one can seem to figure out where it is coming from and what is causing it.

"It comes over the roof into the front yard, it just is all around, and you're surrounded by that sound," said Jean Wimberly, a Brooklyn resident.

It is like nails on a chalkboard, a piercing ringing that has invaded the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood.

"It's happening now, yes it is, you can hear a high pitched sound," said Kaz Mitchell, a Brooklyn resident. "It happens day and night, sometimes 10 minutes between, 2:45 at night, 3 o'clock in the morning."

The screech is a mystery on Myrtle Avenue.

People living there say they first started hearing the annoying sound about three and a half weeks ago and are now determined to find out what it is.

"It interferes with your rest, especially a couple of days ago when the weather was wonderful and your windows are open, it's very disturbing," a resident said.

Mitchell and Wimberly did call 311 and reached out to Eyewitness News for help.

The first obvious stop is that maybe the noise sounds like when you hold a microphone to close to a speaker, so maybe it's coming from a piece of equipment.

Eyewitness News checked, but while the crew was on a break it was back.

Perhaps it's coming from a nearby synagogue that installed a blaring siren that rings every Friday signaling the start of Shabbat, maybe it's feedback from that system.

Eyewitness News did reach out to the city.

It's now going to send out inspectors and reach out to the fire and police departments.
