Philadelphia police are investigating the death of a newborn baby who was found inside a duffel bag.

WEST PHILADELPHIA -- Philadelphia police are investigating the death of a newborn baby who was found inside a duffel bag.

Investigators say the child was born Thursday in the 5800 block of Norfolk Street in West Philadelphia.

The newborn was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania on Friday in a duffel bag and pronounced dead.

The child's 22-year-old mother is also at the hospital. No word on her condition.

Family friends tell Action News that the woman was possibly 5-6 months along.

Few others details have been released.

It's unclear what the baby's manner of death is. An autopsy is expected to be performed.

Police are working to execute a search warrant at the residence where the mother lived with relatives.

The Special Victims Unit is handling the case.
