Bus driver, Burger King employees recount terrifying shooting in Bronx restaurant, 1 wounded

MORRIS HEIGHTS, Bronx (WABC) -- Police are investigating after a shooting inside a Bronx fast food restaurant Wednesday.

The incident happened inside a Burger King on Jerome Avenue in the Morris Heights section just after 2 p.m.

The bullet hole in the wall of the Burger King is the graphic reminder of just how crazy things got Wednesday afternoon, not that anyone who was there will ever forget it.

"I ducked down sir, I sure did, I don't play when it comes to guns. I knew exactly what it was, you know bullets don't have no name on it so I had to protect myself," an employee said.

The gunman fired just once and ran outside, and so did everyone else.

"They were just scattered around, running around, people were scattered on the floor, it was a very intense situation," the employee said.

It was just beginning. The gunman left the Burger King and got on a BX-42 bus that had just stopped outside.

"Right now, I'm still shaking," said Dyal Singh, bus driver.

Singh was driving that bus, and a passenger hurried to his side.

"Driver, driver, there is a man who came through the backdoor with a gun in his hand," Singh said. "And when I looked I saw people start to run to the back of the bus."

Mr. Singh didn't see the man with the gun, but he parked the bus and got out too.

Another passenger said, "The guy with the gun is behind you, so when I look around I don't know who is this guy, but they are telling me the guy with the gun is behind me," Singh said.

Police say the gunman, who was later captured, also tried to carjack a vehicle with a 2-year-old baby inside. A friend of the shooting victim said he was not seriously hurt.

"Thank God, it was skinned. One of the bullets skinned him. It didn't hit him, it didn't hit correctly, it just hit him, he was bleeding, but it didn't go all the way in, that's the best thing," a friend of the victim said.

The suspect fled on foot and was arrested about a block later. A firearm was recovered at the scene.

43-year-old Cisco Ward of Yonkers has multiple prior arrests dating back to 1998 has been charged on several counts including: assault, criminal possession of a weapon, reckless endangerment, grand larceny, criminal trespass, petit larceny, and harassment.

The victim was treated at the scene and released. Authorities do not believe the incident was random, but the motive is unknown.

The investigation is ongoing.
