Cardinal Dolan celebrates Mass in Harlem for nuns killed in attack on Yemen retirement home

HARLEM, New York -- Timothy Cardinal Dolan honored victims of an attack in Yemen that left four nuns brutally murdered.

On Saturday morning, Dolan celebrated Mass at the Harlem convent of the Missionaries of Charity. The convent is on 127th Street in Harlem.

Gunmen stormed a retirement home run by the Catholic order Friday, killing 16 people, including four members of the Missionaries of Charity, the religious order founded by Mother Teresa. The officials said the gunmen raided the home, separating the nuns from the others first, then shooting them.

They later handcuffed the elderly people and opened fire.

A statement Friday from the Archdiocese of New York said the Missionaries of Charity order has worked in the Archdiocese of New York for decades. "Our love and prayers are with the Missionaries of Charity, especially those who labor so generously here in our archdiocese."

Aden descended into lawlessness after a Saudi-led coalition recaptured the city from Shiite Houthi rebels last summer. Yemen's war has killed at least 6,200 civilians and injured tens of thousands of Yemenis, and 2.4 million people have been displaced, according to U.N. figures.
