WATCH: NYPD detective slashed in meat cleaver attack released from hospital

MIDTOWN, Manhattan (WABC) -- The off-duty NYPD detective who was injured after jumping in to try to stop a man with a meat cleaver near Penn Station has been released from the hospital Friday.

Detective Brian O'Donnell was greeted with applause as he exited Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan.

The detective was off-duty, but nearby when officers were in pursuit of a man with a meat cleaver on 32nd Street and Sixth Avenue Thursday evening. O'Donnell was among the officers who cornered the man, and police said the man lashed out at the detective, slashing him across the face with the large knife.

O'Donnell sustained a 6-inch gash from his temple to his jaw, according to the NYPD.

The attack on O'Donnell prompted officers to fire 18 shots at the suspect.

He was kept in the hospital overnight, but released Friday afternoon. A second officer was treated for a possible graze wound from the shots fired by officers at the suspect.

The suspect is listed in critical condition. null
