The detective was off-duty, but nearby when officers were in pursuit of a man with a meat cleaver on 32nd Street and Sixth Avenue Thursday evening. O'Donnell was among the officers who cornered the man, and police said the man lashed out at the detective, slashing him across the face with the large knife.
O'Donnell sustained a 6-inch gash from his temple to his jaw, according to the NYPD.
The attack on O'Donnell prompted officers to fire 18 shots at the suspect.
