FedEx deliveryman caught on camera smashing gate
A.J. Ross reports from East Harlem.

EAST HARLEM (WABC) -- A FedEx deliveryman was caught in the act on video pummeling the front gate of a local business when no one answered the door to sign for packages.

When the East Harlem business owner returned that day he was outraged by what he found.

A FedEx guy delivered much more than packages, there's a lot of damage to the front of at his display case at the Poet's Den Gallery, and how this happened is all captured on video.

From broken glass and dents to broken door knobs the owner believes this wasn't the first time this guy took his frustrations out.

When you think of a special delivery your first thought is probably a package or certified letter, not a combination of jabs and kicks to your front door delivered by the FedEx guy.

"I have no idea what would make him do something like that just that desire to destroy," said Raphael Benavides, the owner of the Poet's Den Gallery.

In the surprising surveillance video captured by the owner of the Poet's Den Gallery in Harlem, you can clearly see the delivery man taking his frustrations out on the front iron gate and display case.

"I was very upset, I was like, why would he be doing that because in the video you can see the way that the whole gate trembled," Benavides said.

For weeks Raphael Benavides had suspected vandals were to blame for the recurring damage he kept noticing outside. Then he installed a security camera and couldn't believe his eyes.

"The neighbor told me, no, 'I think the delivery guy has been kicking the door.' I'm like, 'no way', so I redirected one of my cameras to point it straight at the door," Benavides said.

From a broken intercom and door knobs to dents and cracked glass, the damage is noticeable to naked eye.

"I noticed that the glass was cracked, I mean this is heavy duty double glass, I don't think that I can even crack it with my hand," Benavides said.

After showing FedEx investigators this same video, Benavides says they've now agreed to pay for repairs.

Benavides says he has no hard feelings toward FedEx but he hopes this worker gets help.

"To their credit, they say that they're going to take care of all the damages, but I hope there is some disciplinary action," Benavides said.

Benavides says other neighbors now suspect recent damage to their properties could be connected to the same delivery man.
