Grandfather charged after missing boy on subway found safe in Newark

GOWANUS (WABC) -- The grandfather of a 3-year old boy who went missing while riding the New York City subway is now facing charges.

Investigators say 49-year old Wiley Reynolds fell asleep while riding the F train on Friday with 3-year old Kah-yon Reynolds and another adult.

He's charged with failing to exercise control of a minor.

Kah-yon got on a northbound F train with his grandfather at the Smith - 9th Street Station in the Gowanus section of Brooklyn Friday afternoon. During the trip to Queens, his grandfather fell asleep. When he woke up, the boy was gone.

Another person who Kah-yon knows was riding the train with him and his grandfather. When the grandfather fell asleep, that person decided to go back home to Newark with the boy. His grandfather originally reported him missing to police at the Briarwood-Van Wyck Boulevard train station in Queens at around 5:30 p.m. Friday.

Kah-yon's grandfather lives in Brooklyn and goes to Newark all the time with a friend to spend time with his grandson. The grandfather usually takes the boy out to a park in Newark, but for some reason the grandfather decided to take him to Brooklyn on Friday.

Police say that the grandfather is on methadone and goes to a clinic, and spoke with someone at the clinic who says they saw the boy with the friend. Police then called the friend who said Kah-yon was on a PATH train on the way back home to Newark.
