Emergency responders carry struggling hiker down mountain

MAHWAH, N.J. (WABC) -- Emergency responders in northern New Jersey hiked over a mile to reach a man apparently having a heart attack before carrying him down the side of a mountain to be treated.

Mahwah Police Chief James Batelli told The Record on Sept. 24 a group of hikers reported one of them struggled breathing during a hike through Ramapo Reservation.

Batelli said two officers took an hour to get up a steep incline to reach the 64-year-old man and used cellphones to track him.

The officers gave first aid while park personnel transported paramedics to the scene.

Batelli says the man was transported down the mountain in a stretcher. His vital signs were stable and he was transported to a hospital.

His name and home town were not released.
