PORT JEFFERSON (WABC) -- A homeless man is facing charges on Long Island after authorities say he sexually assaulted a female cab driver Tuesday night.

Police say a female taxi driver picked up 34-year-old Francis Barrios at John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson just after 7 p.m. During the trip, Barrios allegedly assaulted her, causing the vehicle to crash into a fence on Mount Sinai-Coram Road in Mount Sinai.

Following the crash, police say Barrios sexually assaulted the driver.

Police initially responded to the crash after two Good Samaritans pulled over and called 911, and after further investigation, they arrested Barrios.

He is charged with first-degree criminal sexual act, first-degree attempted rape, second-degree strangulation and third-degree assault.

Barrios is a registered Level 3 sex offender.

The name of the cab company is not being released to protect the victim's identity.
