Investigation underway into police-involved shooting that killed man in Middletown, Orange County

MIDDLETOWN, New York (WABC) -- Authorities are investigating a police-involved shooting that killed a man in Orange County Wednesday night.

According to Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler, Middletown police officers went to an apartment on Overlook Drive at about 6:50 p.m. in response to a 911 call of a violent domestic incident involving a man with a handgun who was possibly intoxicated.

A woman had called police, and told them her ex-boyfriend was at her Middletown apartment armed with a gun. Police said she told them he had threatened to shoot her.

The man refused to come out for police when they arrived, officials said, instead threatening to shoot himself and responding officers.

During an ensuing confrontation, the man was shot by Middletown police. He was pronounced dead at Orange Regional Medical Center.

The man has been identified as 59-year-old Richard Dinneny of Middletown, who authorities say was released from prison in 2006 after serving time on manslaughter and assault convictions.

Dinneny was also the subject of an order of protection that prohibited him from entering the apartment complex on Overlook Place, and from being in the presence of the woman whose apartment he was in, Hoovler said.

A black pellet gun that resembles a semiautomatic pistol was recovered from the area where Dinneny was shot.

The shooting will be investigated by the state police and the Orange County District Attorney's Office.

No officers were injured.
