BRENTWOOD, N.Y. (WABC) -- Suffolk County Police have arrested a man they said broke into a residence, assaulted a man and extorted cash from the victim's family Friday evening.
Around 8:45 p.m., a man was asleep in his bedroom in a Bohemia trailer park when he was attacked with a mallet.
During the assault, police said the suspect, Joseph Ferraro, 27, phoned the father of the victim and told him that he would further injure the victim if the father did not bring him cash. The father withdrew the money from an ATM, then brought it to Ferraro's Brentwood home.
The victim was found by his mother when she came home. He was taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore.
Ferraro was arrested in front of his Brentwood residence at 12:35 a.m. and charged him with burglary, assault and grand larceny. He is scheduled to be arraigned Saturday.
