Westchester man allegedly breaks teen's jaw in bike rage incident

MOUNT PLEASANT, New York (WABC) -- A Yorktown man was arrested after Westchester County police say he assaulted a teenager in a case of bike rage.

The incident happened around 10 a.m. Saturday along North County Trailway in Mount Pleasant.

Authorities say 59-year-old Gregory Avon was involved with a bicycle collision with a 14-year-old boy, after which he allegedly punched the victim in the face and caused serious injuries to his jaw and mouth.

Avon reportedly fled after the incident and was followed by several cyclists, who gave pursuit but eventually lost sight of him on Route 117 in the vicinity of Pace University.

Officers, assisted by the Westchester County Police aviation unit helicopter and Pleasantville police, began a search of the area but could not immediately locate the cyclist. Westchester County Police Officer James O'Meara spotted a bicyclist near Routes 22 and 120 in North Castle around 11:15 a.m. who fit the suspect's description and took him into custody.

The boy was taken to the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, where he underwent surgery.

Avon is charged with assault and endangering the welfare of a child.
