Man hit by manhole cover on Cross Bronx, dies

BRONX, N.Y. (WABC) -- A truck driver was killed when a manhole cover crashed through his front windshield on the Cross Bronx Expressway Wednesday.

Jose Duran, 35, of Springfield, Mass., was driving a 2010 tractor trailer westbound around 5:30 a.m. on the Cross Bronx Expressway when the cover crashed through the glass and struck Duran in the head.

The vehicle then collided with a 2012 tractor trailer driven by a 31-year-old man who was also westbound on the Cross Bronx. Duran was pinned inside, then transported to Lincoln Hospital where he later died. The operator of the second vehicle was not physically hurt.

The investigation is ongoing by the New York City Police Department.
