Missing Newark principal found safe in Philadelphia

FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, New Jersey (WABC) -- A Newark, New Jersey, elementary school principal who disappeared earlier this week has been found safe.

The Franklin Township Police Department said Bertha Dyer was located in Philadelphia Friday. No details on how she was found or the circumstances behind her disappearance have been released.

Dyer, 68, was reported missing Wednesday after she didn't show up to work at Mount Vernon Elementary School that day - the first day teachers were to report.

Dyer had been there earlier in the week preparing for the school year and talking with administrators.

The principal's sister, Sheri Dyer, and retired Newark police detective Michael Beasley said Bertha Dyer is always punctual and always shows up at the school early each morning -- and that's why her no-show raised so much concern.

She lives in Somerset and commutes to Newark.

"I would like to thank of the agencies involved for their tireless efforts in this case. I am thankful that Ms. Dyer was found safely and reunited with her family," said Chief Lawrence Roberts.
