2 Newark police officers stabbed, punched while breaking up fight

NEWARK, New Jersey (WABC) -- At least two Newark police officers were injured, one stabbed, while breaking up a large fight.

Officers were breaking up a large fight when they were attacked around 3 a.m., near Elizabeth Avenue and Branford Street.

Officials said one officer was stabbed in the arm and one was punched in the face. Both were taken to the hospital.

The officer who was stabbed managed to hold that suspect and place him into custody. The knife has not been recovered.

Others also may be taken into custody as the investigation continues.

Both are in stable condition at area hospitals.
