NEW YORK (WABC) -- There's a new warning about crooks using fake traffic tickets to try to steal your personal information.

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles says the phishing scheme involves emails, saying drivers must pay a traffic ticket within 48 hours or their license will be revoked.

Despite how real the email may appear, the DMV cautions it is a hoax and actually may contain a computer virus.

The DMV says it never sends emails urging drivers to pay traffic tickets within 48 hours.
