PATERSON, New Jersey (WABC) -- A probe into a shooting at a Paterson 7-11 store is in its very early stages.

The Passaic County Prosecutor's Office and the Paterson Police Department are investigating.

Witnesses said that Thursday morning, there was a shooting outside the store at 262 Main St. in Paterson. They said three people were standing outside and that one man was eventually shot.

"The guy came out with the gun and said, 'this is a robbery'. The cop told him, 'put down your gun, I am an undercover cop.' And he didn't want to do it. He just got shot," said one witness. "And the other one ran."

It is unclear what led to the shooting, whether it was a robbery inside of the store or another confrontation. It is possible there is one or more suspects on the run.
