UPPER WEST SIDE, Manhattan (WABC) -- Police are looking for four suspects after a 19-year-old man was slashed at the 96th Street subway station on the Upper West Side.

Just after midnight Saturday, the victim was waiting for the crosstown bus while looking at his phone when the men approached him and asked him where he was from.

They punched him and slashed him in the head. The victim ran into the No. 1 train station as the men chased him.

The four then fled north on Broadway.

The victim was taken to St. Luke's Hospital where he is in serious condition.

The investigation is ongoing.

Just last week, the NYPD announced its plans to implement what it's calling Operation Cutting Edge.

The initiative will help track stabbings and slashings throughout the city.
