EAST SIDE, Manhattan (WABC) -- NYPD officers sprang into action to make a special delivery on the FDR Drive during the Tuesday morning rush hour, helping to bring a newborn into the world.

A mom went into labor in a car stopped in the northbound lanes at 48th Street, and the baby just couldn't wait to get to the hospital.

Officers from the NYPD's ESU Truck 1 helped deliver Nicola Wong just after 8 a.m.

The infant weighs in at 7 pounds 6 ounces.

The NYPD tweeted out a photo of the officers and the baby:

Detective Michael Sharpe, driving in an unmarked car, heard a 911 call for a woman in labor and discovered the family on the northbound right shoulder.

Det. Sharpe approached the vehicle, opened the passenger side door and observed a pregnant woman in labor, police say.

The baby's father was on the phone with a 911 dispatcher receiving detailed instructions on child delivery.

Det. Sharpe along with the child's father then assisted the pregnant woman in the delivery of a baby boy.

They wrapped the newborn in a blanket, keeping him warm while the child's father continued to receive instructions from the 911 operator.

Shortly after the birth, NYPD Emergency Service Unit Truck 1 arrived, cleared the baby's airway and cut the umbilical cord.

Additional NYPD Highway Patrol Officers also responded and flagged down an ambulette.

The ambulette was provided with an escort to New York Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center where both mother and newborn boy are in stable condition.
