String of similar Upper East Side break-ins has residents on edge

UPPER EAST SIDE, Manhattan (WABC) -- Police are investigating a rash of similar break-ins across the Upper East Side of Manhattan that has residents on edge.

There have been nine incidents in last two months, all in a 10-block radius between East 82nd and East 92nd streets, between Lexington and First avenues. Police are looking for three suspects.

The residential burglaries stretch from Feb. 10 to March 21, and each time, the suspect or suspects made off with cash and jewelry.

In one case, $3,800 in cash was stolen, while in another, the thieves made off with a 38-inch television.

Police have put up signs on several buildings in the area, warning of the trend. And on top of that, the NYPD's 19th Precinct has tweeted out advice, urging residents to use their deadbolts and not to rely just on slam lock features that authorities say are more vulnerable to break-ins.

"The NYPD offers free security surveys for residential homes and commercial establishments," they tweeted. "Contact your local crime prevention officer to schedule an appointment. That number is 212-452-0630."

At this point, authorities have no description of the suspect, but anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS (8477).
