Suffolk County police officer and school nurse revive 10-year-old boy school

BRENTWOOD, Long Island (WABC) -- A Suffolk County police officer and a school nurse were honored Friday for saving the life of a 10-year-old boy.

Police responded to a call of a boy who was found unresponsive at Laurel Park Elementary School at approximately 2:45 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.

Patrol Officer John McAuley, a member of the SCPD Medical Crisis Action Team arrived minutes later and realized the boy had no pulse and was not breathing, police say.

Nurse Mary Alice Koch began chest compressions while Officer McAuley began ventilations using a Bag Valve Mask device. They continued CPR for approximately two minutes at which time the boy regained consciousness and his pulse and breathing were restored.

The Brentwood Legion Ambulance arrived and took the boy to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore in stable condition.

Nurse Koch received a gift certificate from the School District for shopping on Black Friday.
