Suspect wounded in police-involved shooting in the Bronx

KINGSBRIDGE HEIGHTS (WABC) -- Authorities say a suspect was shot and wounded early Sunday in a police-involved shooting in the Bronx.

Shortly before 4 a.m., officers on patrol responded to 911 calls of an assault in progress inside of 2741 Sedgwick Avenue in the Kingsbridge Heights section.

Upon arrival, police say two officers encountered a 34-year-old man entering the lobby from the stairwell area, assaulting a 32-year-old woman with a knife.

According to police, the officers ordered the suspect to drop his weapon, and the suspect refused to comply, continuing to assault the woman.

The officers each fired once, striking the suspect in the torso.

The suspect is hospitalized in stable condition.

The woman is hospitalized in stable condition, and the two officers were treated for tinnitus. No one else was injured.

Police say the knife, an approximately 8" blade, was recovered at the scene, between the second floor landing and the lobby.

The suspect, 34-year old Juan Rosario, has been charged with attempted murder and felony assault.
