Viewing held for Kristian Leka, victim in Bronx car wreck

BRONX, N.Y. (WABC) -- A steady stream of mourners came to a Brooklyn funeral home Tuesday at the wake for one of the victims of a car wreck that killed three on Halloween.

A viewing was held for Kristian Leka at Farenga Brothers in the Bronx.

Kristian was taking his little sister Fiona trick-or-treating Saturday night when a car plowed onto the sidewalk, striking a crowd of celebrators.

Kristian was killed. His little sister survived as did his fiance Greta, who believes the only reason why they are alive is because Kristian pushed them out of harm's way.

You could see Greta's arm injury as she attended the wake for the man she never got to marry.

Friends tell us Kristian, an immigrant from northern Albania, was a student of hard work and family devotion, with a heart of gold.

"The son really died as a hero. He was trying to protect his sister, he gave up his life for his sister so that should give them some comfort," said mourner Simon Qafa.

Also killed in the horrific crash: 65-year-old Louis Perez, a Vietnam war hero, and his beloved granddaughter 10-year-old Nyanna Aquil.

As for the 52-year-old driver, police are are still trying to determine if he suffered a seizure while behind the wheel.

Surveillance video shows him repeatedly slamming into the back of a taxi before lurching onto the sidewalk.

Leka's 9-year-old sister and a 21-year-old female friend also were injured, but not critically. Nyanna's younger sister, 3-year-old Yasima, suffered injuries to her neck. All were treated and released from the hospital. All of the victims live in the Bronx.

The driver of the Charger was taken to Jacobi Medical Center. Police said he is cooperating with investigators and no charges have been filed.
