Woman charged with murder in fatal stabbing at Brooklyn YWCA

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn (WABC) -- It's supposed to serve as a safe haven, and affordable place for women from all over, but on early Saturday morning a YWCA facility in Brooklyn became a bloody crime scene.

Police say 48-year-old Liza Millet was stabbed to death in her eighth floor apartment. Chilling screams and 911 calls first brought police to the Third Avenue Property in Brooklyn Heights Once police arrived, they discovered Millet was stabbed numerous times in the back and torso. She also had defensive wounds on her arms.

Investigators say 55-year-old Dorothy Curry, a neighbor who lived five units down, attacked Millet, and then barricaded herself inside her own apartment.

After nearly fifteen minutes, the suspect surrendered to police, and a kitchen knife was recovered at the scene.

Curry is charged with second-degree murder. Police say she was sent for a psychiatric evaluation.

Other women who knew the victim, say they are devastated about her sudden passing.

"This morning is really disheartening, because the lady that was attacked was a very sweet woman that was from the Islands, and I had a great rapport with her," said one YWCA resident who did not want to be identified.

Another resident said the victim was a very hard worker, a home health care employee, and a 'wonderful cook'.

Counseling and support are being offered to other residents of the building.
