STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- A worker was killed when the concrete ceiling at a Staten Island car dealership under renovation partially collapsed, burying him under the debris.
The interior section of the ceiling came down on the 43-year-old man just after 8:15 a.m. inside Dana Lincoln Ford at 266 West Service Road, in the Travis section of Staten Island off the Shore Expressway. According to police, the second floor of a two-story building collapsed onto the first floor while under construction.
Delfino Jesus Velazquez Mendizabal, of Staten Island, was pulled from the debris and rushed to Richmond University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. There were no other injuries.
The cause of the collapse, which brought a large emergency response, is under investigation.
