NEW JERSEY (WABC) -- Amtrak and New Jersey Transit seem to be back on track after the heat contributed to another commuter nightmare. The scorching temperatures and humidity led to a circuit breaker tripping, causing major delays. And the latest setback came after a night of delays.
"My commute has been smooth," commuter Ali Shakur said. "Trains been on time. No delays."
And the monitors say the same, with mostly "all aboards." Shakur traveled from New York Penn Station into Newark.
"Got over here in 15 minutes," Shakur said. "So that was OK."
But the current situation is a far cry from the nightmare commutes of Monday night and Tuesday morning. Delays and cancellations turned the evening rush hour into an all-night event for thousands of people, with Amtrak saying hot temperatures caused overhead wire problems and later a tripped circuit breaker that limited the number of trains through the Hudson River tunnel.
As Amtrak cleared the weather-related mechanical issues, there were residual delays.
Amtrak personnel rectified the problem, and normal operations in and out of New York's Penn Station resumed just after 8 a.m. but 30-minute delays persisted as late at 9 a.m.
The cause is under investigation.
Riders took to Twitter to vent about the delays:
Monday evening, overhead wire issues caused a train to get stuck in a tunnel, and riders were delayed up to an hour.
