NEW YORK (WABC) -- Nearly a half dozen hecklers on Thursday interrupted NYPD Commissioner William Bratton's plea to the New York City Council for funding to add 450 more police officers.
The protesters, who shouted "no new cops," were ejected from the council chambers, and Brattong resumed his testimony.
Bratton said more manpower is needed to keep residents safe from two new challenges -- violence and hostility towards officers and the threats from ISIS.
Many council members have said they're in favor of hiring up to 1,000 additional officers, but Mayor Bill de Blasio claims no more officers are needed.
Insiders here say a compromise is all but certain.
Bratton also revealed that hundreds of officers are being re-trained and re-deployed as part of a "Rapid NYPD Strike Force designed to combat active shooters and terrorists.
The new, dedicated unit will replace the department's Critical Response Teams that were pulled together every day from various precincts across the city to confront an emerging threat.
