19-year-old man in critical condition after being shot by police in the Bronx

LONGWOOD, Bronx (WABC) -- A 19-year-old man is in critical condition after being shot by police in the Bronx.

The shooting happened inside a three-story building on Intervale Avenue just after 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Police had received a call at about 7 p.m. from the girlfriend of Shemel Jones, saying he had assaulted her.

Officers showed up to find her with several bruises to the eye and face area, and when they arrived, they saw Jones flee the scene.

He was located a few doors down in an apartment building, inside a bedroom.

The NYPD says Jones was armed with a large kitchen knife.

Officers ordered him to stop and drop it and pepper sprayed Jones, but he continued to advance on officers and they fired one shot, hitting him in the torso, according to the NYPD.

"There was an additional 911 call that supports the officer's claim that Mr. Jones advanced toward the officers with a knife in his hand," said NYPD Assistant Chief Larry Nikunen. "There's someone that called that was in the apartment at the time of the incident. I can't say whether they witnessed the actual discharge of the shot."

Police say there were numerous witnesses in the building and on the street at that time.
