NEW YORK (WABC) -- Police will be stepping up security at Madison Square Garden and the Summer Stage series in Central Park in response to the Las Vegas massacre.

Those venues are expected to draw thousands in the coming days.

The NYPD calls it a counter-terrorism overlay, the level of security that will be in place at large mass gatherings.

It will be in effect Friday night at the second Katy Perry concert at Madison Square Garden and also at the events in the park.

The NYPD says there will be three counter-sniper squads deployed in addition to other resources.

Active shooter training is also now standard procedure.

"9,900 cops, in the next two classes it'll be 10,000, have gone through active shooter tactics training," said NYPD Deputy Commissioner John Miller. "That has been focused largely on the patrol forces in uniform. These are going to be the people who are going to get the call first and get there first."

Another event drawing tight security will be the Yankees playoff game in the Bronx Sunday night.
